Do We Need A Holistic Approach to Pregnancy and Birth?

Pregnancy is a time when a woman’s body undergoes several changes to accommodate, nurture and ultimately deliver a new life. Not all of these changes may manifest in a noticeable form as these changes occur naturally and in their own time and order. It is, however, greatly helpful if the woman is given external support to maintain her and own baby’s health through gestation and during pregnancy.

Most couples today are aware that following a healthy diet plan, engaging in suitable physical activity and reducing exposure to stress are beneficial to ensuring a safe pregnancy. In addition, we can look into incorporating some natural, curative, non-invasive therapies that can provide a whole host of benefits.

In the physical sense, ante-natal exercises help to strengthen the body and keep it fit and supple. Pregnancy yoga, or yoga exercises that are specifically designed for pregnant women, enhance overall well-being and create a feeling of calmness. We also have a system of ayurvedic massages that help to maintain skin health and may assist in relieving discomfort and pain. There is also a wealth of wisdom with regard to the foods that are beneficial in different stages of pregnancy – and, of course, foods that are to be taken in moderation or avoided. There are also pain management techniques that can prepare the mother physically and mentally for natural birth. There are varied practices that may be followed in the post-delivery period as well, to help with lactation and post-partum recovery.

These therapies have been a part of traditional cultural practices for generations. In many families, one or more practices are handed down through the older members – by adapting the full range of therapies, and incorporating them with modern medical approaches, we can provide holistic birthing support for the mother and baby.

With the aid of modern medicine practices – including regular scans and tests – we can customise the programme for each person, keeping in mind their case history, current physical condition and potential pregnancy risks.

Pregnancy and birthing are life-changing events – and it is important that we provide adequate support and guidance to the woman to prepare and go through the process. By bringing together practical applications of yesteryear wisdom and modern medicine, we help the woman enjoy the best of nature and technology, and thereby experience a safe, healthy and happy journey to parenthood.
