High Risk Pregnancies

How to Handle a ‘High-risk Pregnancy’

Sunitha (named changed) was diagnosed as being diabetic in her 20s. She became pregnant in her mid-30s.

During her first consultation, we shared with her that she would be regarded as having a “high-risk pregnancy”.

Understandably, Sunitha and her husband felt a rush of anxiety on hearing that term. So, we took the time to explain in detail what it means, and how we can handle it to ensure thehealth and well-being of mum and baby.

First off, let us understand what the term ‘high risk’ means. This refers to possible issues that may arise during the pregnancy or delivery due to existing health and physiological conditions. The doctors need to be aware of these conditions ONLY to ensure that they can guide the mother to be cautious and ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy.

The factors a gynaecologist will look into include the mother’s age, height and weight (especially if she is overweight), and if she has any pre-existing health issues (such as heart problems, hyper-tension, diabetes or bronchitis). This helps the doctor to provide appropriate guidance and support.

Furthermore, if a person is seen as being in the “high-risk pregnancy category”, the gynaecologist will pay close attention to whether the patient is anaemic, if she is possibly developing gestational diabetes, pregnancy induced hypertension, and if she is gaining too much weight too fast or if she is not gaining weight adequately. More importantly, the doctors will look into possible signs of infection (such as urinary tract infection or UTI), which need to be treated immediately.

In Sunitha’s case, we had to careful, as uncontrolled sugar levels could result insevere health issues for her and her child. The mother could develop high blood pressure, face kidney problems and even come close to losing the child. The mother’s diabetic condition – if not kept in check – could also give rise to physical complications in the baby.

At every stage,we watchedSunitha’s health closely andadvisedher on diet, exercise routine and lifestyle changesthat need to be followed, apart from medicines and supplements. Once all their queries were addressed, her husband and she approached the pregnancy with a positive outlook; her family members were also very supportive and helpful through the pregnancy journey.

Today,Sunitha is a happy mother, and she follows a good diet and exercise routine – not just to keep herself healthy but also to set a good example for her little one!
