Hormonal Health

Hormonal Harmony

The recent month-long strict lockdown and the shift to work-from-home has led many women to fall prey to a very sedentary lifestyle. Unhealthy routines are becoming more common than we would like – eating fast food on a regular basis, missing out on important nutrients, and not getting sufficient exercise.
The effect of such changes? Hormonal imbalances and weight gain. When I see my patients after a couple of weeks, I notice a sharp rise in weight in many of them. One of them gained a whopping 10 kilos in less than 2 months!
Many women are saddled with more chores at home, over and above their regular work – and a ‘little treat’ now and then is seen as a mood-booster. However, this ‘little’ can add up to a lot, especially when our daily physical activity is less than before.
I am not looking at weight gain from the point of view of looks or attractiveness. As a gynaecologist, I am concerned about hormonal imbalances, irregular menstrual cycles, problems with pregnancy, and reduced immunity, which results from erratic weight gain. So, I am sharing with you some simple but effective ways in which you can keep yourself in good shape – lockdown or otherwise.

Immunity Boosters: Vitamins are important, especially vitamin C and D, to maintain a good immune system. Vitamin C can be found in foods with citric acid; adding an orange to your breakfast is a good start. Vitamin D can be taken in the form of vitamin supplements. Also, drink a glass of warm milk mixed a spoon of turmeric once a day – the natural antiseptic in turmeric will boost your immunity. To keep out infections, gargle with a mix of warm water and Betadine twice a day.
Physical Wellness: Hormonal balance is achieved through a combination of physical activity AND mindful rest. Avoid excessive cardio and bouts of intense physical exercise is not everyone. Too much exercise can generate stress hormones, which are damaging to your body. I would recommend a mix of activities, such as cardio, yoga and brisk walking. A beneficial (but often neglected) practice is good breathing. A routine of calming, energising breathing exercises in the morning can go a long way in helping your body become stronger and healthy.
I know this is cliché, but your health is your greatest wealth! Look after it well. If you need anything, we doctors are always here to help.
